Vaping has been under fire pretty much since it started, and we at Smoke Tokz smoke shop and Vape Tokz shop in Kansas City have had to watch the news closely to see what’s currently going on because there is always something new happening. Recently, we noticed a few things falling into place that have us somewhat concerned, and we think that our vaping customers should be as well.

It should be no secret that the FDA has been eyeing the regulation of vape products for quite some time, but this time they managed to use the veil of an international crisis to ramrod legislation regarding synthetic nicotine products into law in a matter of days without any debate from our elected officials. Unless you live under a rock, you’ve likely heard about the war in Ukraine, and as in most violent conflicts with our allies, the United States steps up to help in the form of weapons, troops, aid, and in this case, money. On March 15th, 2022, a bill was introduced called the Omnibus Budget Bill, which would supposedly quickly and efficiently get monetary aid to Ukraine. The bill itself was over 10,000 long and passed both the House and Senate in less than 48 hours which means those elected officials that voted for it could not have possibly read it. More disturbing is that a rider was attached to the bill, ultimately giving the FDA the power to regulate synthetic nicotine products, which pretty much dominate the market, including our selection at Vape Tokz Vape Shop. Now, vape manufacturers have a limited window of time to submit an application showing how their product can be a benefit to public health. In contrast, big tobacco companies’ products are all approved to market and have shown time and time again that there is a nuisance to public health. Under the guise of trying to “curb teen vaping” (which coincidentally has been on the decline for years), the FDA is essentially approving only vape companies that are already completely or partially owned by such titans of tobacco as RJ Reynolds and Phillip Morris, both of which have taken a financial hit from smokers choosing to vape as a safer alternative. While the timeline for vape companies to essentially beg the FDA for market approval isn’t crystal clear, we at Smoke and Vape Tokz are prepared for whatever changes come.
